How To Set Up A Productive Home Office

March 27, 2020

Over the past few years, more and more companies have been creating virtual positions for employees to spend part of their time at home. Throughout the past few weeks, we have been social distancing and many have been working remotely, needing at-home work spaces more than ever. First America Homes offers a variety of floor plans that have options for studies or extra bedrooms that can be converted to a work space.

Below are some tips on how to create a productive work environment in the comfort of your own home.

1. Technology

First and foremost, make sure you are setting up your office space in a place that you can easily plug into an outlet.  Also, make sure that the room has a strong wifi connection.

2. Lighting

Natural lighting is a great assest to any workplace, commercial or at home.  This causes less strain on the eyes, and can help improve your concentration and overall mood.  If natural lighting is not an option, consider purchasing a desk lamp.

3. Decor

Having a neat and organized setting makes it much easier to be productive and raises overall morale. Adding decorative elements and pesonalizing your space will help improve confidence and motivation as well.
Here are a few home office ideas for decor:

  • Prints with motivational quotes
  • Photos
  • Colorful area rug
  • Greenery/Plants
  • Paint the walls an energizing color
  • Stylish shelving

4. Minimize Distractions

Some common distractions when working at home are family/friends, the kitchen, watching television and going on social media. By setting some ground rules, you will help yourself to be more productive.

For example, you could:

  • hang a ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door
  • tell your family or friends that you won’t be available until 5pm
  • switch off your phone or leave it in another room
  • set dedicated lunch/snack breaks

5. Knowing When To Disconnect

When your office is at home it’s harder to get away from your work and forget about it. It can be helpful to go for a walk, do food shopping, go to the gym or visit a friend so you can create a bit of distance.
